BAFTA Award Winner Shane Meadows (This is England, Dead Man’s Shoes) returns with this dramatic follow up to the critically acclaimed TV spin-off This is England ’86. This is England ’88 takes place 2 years on from its predecessor, and continues to chronicle the lives of a group of friends from working class England as they each deal with their own separate issues and tribulations. These days the group isn’t the same as it was. Shaun is studying drama at college and preparing himself for a Christmas production. Woody has a new girlfriend and has distanced himself from the group. Combo is in prison after taking the rap for the murder of Mick, and Lol is struggling to bring up her child with little help from the father, Milky. As Christmas approaches, each person’s life is tested in different ways. Shaun is faced with temptation as he becomes close to his drama buddy Fay, Woody begins to miss his old life but struggles to come to terms with Milky’s betrayal, and Lol begins to fear for her sanity when visions of Mick begin haunting her wherever she goes. Defending Literature in Early Modern England
50,90 CHF *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Why was literature so often defended and defined in early modern England in terms of its ability to provide the Horatian ideal of both profit and pleasure? This book, first published in 2000, analyses Renaissance literary theory in the context of social transformations of the period, focusing on conflicting ideas about gentility that emerged as the English aristocracy evolved from a feudal warrior class to a civil elite. Through close readings centered on works by Thomas Elyot, Philip Sidney and Edmund Spenser, Matz argues that literature attempted to mediate a complex set of contradictory social expectations. His original study engages with important theoretical work such as Pierre Bourdieu's and offers a substantial critique of New Historicist theory. It challenges recent accounts of the power of Renaissance authorship, emphasizing the uncertain status of literature during this time of cultural change, and sheds light on why and how canonical works became canonical.

Eureka Entertainment to release John Schlesinger’s YANKS, a moving and romantic WWII tale of love starring Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave, in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition as part of the Eureka Classics range from 3 December 2018. A World War II epic both sweeping and intimate, Yanks is a triumph for director John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, Sunday Bloody Sunday), and a moving showcase for its splendid ensemble cast led by Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave. A war film without battle scenes, Schlesinger's drama instead focuses on relationships far from the front, examining the romantic entanglements between the stationed U.S. soldiers and the locals in a small town in Northern England in the 1944 period before the Normandy landings. Three very different women find themselves attracted to the American G.I.s at a new military base in town. Gere is Sgt. Matt Dyson, initiating a tentative courtship with a young woman still pining for her fiancée overseas. Redgrave is wealthy socialite Helen, engaged in an affair with a captain (William Devane), while both of them long for their respective spouses far from home. And Sergeant Ruffelo's fling with Mollie (Wendy Morgan) occurs just as the interactions between the Yanks and their British hosts begin to strain under the tension of the war, and uncertainty about what happens to their new romances. A personal passion project for Schlesinger -- who was given free creative reign after the success of Marathon Man (1976) -- Yanks was generally not afforded the attention it deserved upon initial release, and as one of the director's warmest films, it's a gem ripe for rediscovery. Features: 1080p presentation (on Blu-ray) from a new high-definition transfer Original LPCM mono audio (on Blu-ray) Optional English SDH subtitles Archival Interview with director John Schlesinger Original theatrical trailer PLUS: A collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film, alongside rare archival imagery

Something evil stirs in Arkham, and only you can stop it. Blurring the traditional lines between roleplaying and card game experiences, Arkham Horror: The Card Game is a Living Card Game of Lovecraftian mystery, monsters, and madness! In the game, you and your friend (or up to three friends with two Core Sets) become characters within the quiet New England town of Arkham. You have your talents, sure, but you also have your flaws. Perhaps youve dabbled a little too much in the writings of the Necronomicon, and its words continue to haunt you. Perhaps you feel compelled to cover up any signs of otherworldly evils, hampering your own investigations in order to protect the quiet confidence of the greater population. Perhaps youll be scarred by your encounters with a ghoulish cult. No matter what compels you, no matter what haunts you, youll find both your strengths and weaknesses reflected in your custom deck of cards, and these cards will be your resources as you work with your friends to unravel the worlds most terrifying mysteries. Each of your adventures in Arkham Horror LCG carries you deeper into mystery. Youll find cultists and foul rituals. Youll find haunted houses and strange creatures. And you may find signs of the Ancient Ones straining against the barriers to our world... The basic mode of play in Arkham LCG is not the adventure, but the campaign. You might be scarred by your adventures, your sanity may be strained, and you may alter Arkhams landscape, burning buildings to the ground. All your choices and actions have consequences that reach far beyond the immediate resolution of the scenario at hand — and your actions may earn you valuable experience with which you can better prepare yourself for the adventures that still lie before you.

Maverick filmmaker Robert Altman continued a stunning run of celebrated work that included McCabe and Mrs Miller, The Long Goodbye and Nashville with 3 Women, a dreamy masterpiece that would fend off the titanic Star Wars as Roger Ebert’s best film of 1977. In a California resort town shy and impressionable Pinky (Sissy Spacey, Badlands, Carrie) strikes up a friendship with her fellow nurse ‘Thoroughly Modern’ Millie (Shelley Duvall, Nashville, Thieves Like Us). As the two spend more time together Pinky becomes dependent on Millie, adopting aspects of her personality and appearance, things take an unusual and darker turn as Pinky discovers Millie with a man, a local bar owner whose wife forms the third of the title’s three women. Based on a series of dreams and influenced by Ingmar Bergman’s Persona, Robert Altman famously cut the deal for 3 Women with 20th Century Fox in a matter of minutes and the remarkable faith of the studio would produce one of the most striking works of the period. Special Features: High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation Original uncompressed PCM mono audio Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing New video interview with David Thompson, editor of 'Altman on Altman' and producer of the BBC’s 'Robert Altman in England' Archive interview with Shelley Duvall from the Cannes Film Festival - The actress describes working with Altman, his methods and how she started acting Galleries featuring behind-the-scenes photos, the Cannes Film Festival press conference and promotional images Trailer Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Nathanael Marsh Booklet featuring new writing on the film by critic David Jenkins and excerpts from Altman on Altman, illustrated with original stills
